SUNDAY 1st AUGUST: Moving Into Music SOLOS CONCERTS:
Concert 2: 11.00 am | Piano Students of Nicholas Young and Yi-Ling Ng
From the outset, host Nicholas Young set the scene for a warm, friendly and supportive Zoom-room which welcomed the student performers.
This concert showcased students of all ages and all stages of their development.
It began with students of Yi-Ling, who had clearly been prepared well and played with ease and confidence. Her student from Singapore’s performance was presented on video via screen share. Yi-ling, whose musical interests and tastes stretch from the classics to the most modern music for gaming, performed music used in McDonalds ads.
Nicholas not only had students young and old performing. He helped a first-time performer restart a few times until the whole piece was played right through. It was a heart-warming demonstration of a student being led in a teacher’s safe hands. Nicholas then presented his most advanced, Licentiate – level, student. She, unable to attend the concert because she was at work, presented via a video of her recent piano competition performance. Nicholas then explained how even an experienced and virtuosic performer (my words) needs to practice and exercise his technical ability. He played an Etude one that he’d played often in his teens – one that is used to keep his technical ability in tip top condition!
