Melbourne’s Music in May – for mothers and others …
About the performance
Mother’s Day is the perfect time to celebrate the women in your life, and what better way to treat them than a stunning chamber music performance from some of Melbourne’s finest.
- The centrepiece of this special program is Wagner’s joyful tone poem Siegfried Idyll, written as a birthday present to his wife following the birth of their son. On Christmas morning of 1870, Wagner recruited members of his local orchestra to stand on the steps of his villa performing the opening strains, so his beloved would wake up to the performance.
- Also featuring works by Ravel and Elgar, this concert will make the most of MSO’s exceptional chamber musicians, as well as a guest soprano performing Ravel’s beautiful Trois poèmes de Stéphane Mallarmé, who will join an ensemble of flutes, clarinets, piano, and string quartet.
- Christopher Moore, who programmed this concert, reflected on his mum’s favourite pieces when choosing repertoire. “I play for her whenever she’s around, and she always cries when I perform Elgar’s Salut d’amour. That’s on the program for her. When I was knee high to a grasshopper, Mum was taking me to SSO concerts. She sings in a choir, and she’s a really dedicated amateur musician, in the truest sense of the word – she does it because she loves it.”
